waxing gibbous

I changed my home page from one that told me what was on TV to my google home page, which in addition to the usual groovy google reader/gmail/weather also tells me the phases of the moon, a vocabulary word, my horoscope, and a "crystal ball" (magic 8-ball knockoff). Listing it out like that, it sounds like I am CONCERNED FOR THE FUTURE, which is true on the one hand and not so much on the other.

moonphase: Waxing Gibbous, 99% of full. (doesn't waxing sound better than waning? I guess waning's alright and certainly part of the natural order of things, but it sounds like the moon needs a waning couch because its corset is too tight or something. A lunar swoon. "get the smelling salts, the moon is waning!" I think Waxing Crescent sounds the prettiest of all, but we don't get to that for a few weeks yet.) Anyway, I thought I might not like having the exact phase of the moon spelled out for me in scientific percentages and language -- thought it might somehow spoil the Old Way of looking and determining if it's full yet or just past full, etc. etc. But it doesn't. As per usual, I worry and worry about something that turns out not to be a problem after all.

I can see the moon out my window, but it is very high so I have to lean back in my chair. (it is worth it.)

More soon, including my new policy of being aggressively positive on election matters. Or maybe I'll just say that part now: I am tired getting pushed around by Rovian fear mongering thugs. I was letting my fear get the better of me -- I've been burned before. Best example: I never in a MILLION YEARS thought that GWB would be serving a second term! But this is the kind of weakness they prey on and is not sufficient reason to just close my eyes and hope for the best this time around. I see what you're doing, you lying sanctimonious crapweasels! It's not going to work!

BTW, Tina Fey was scary-brilliant on tonight's SNL opener. ("I can see Russia from my house!") Poehler was, as always, HILARIOUS.

  1. Without the internet I would have missed T & A last night opening SNL and that would have been tragic! I love those two together. As we get closer to that first Tuesday in November my stomach gets twistier and twistier. I do not have a good feeling. I would love to be wrong, and I am thinking that I might have to step out of my comfort zone and start doing something volunteerwise this election cycle so I am at least involved and not all whiny about how things turn out. This country is freaking me out. Oh. Whatever happens that Tuesday in November I will be attending Wordstock the following weekend to either celebrate or commiserate with fellow literates.

  2. I love Fey and Poehler so much. That sketch was right on.

I went through the same twisty stomach feelings shortly after Palin was announced. I don't think we should underestimate her, but at the same time, I'm tired of worrying that every little thing is going to be THE THING that will make the election go the wrong way. Before Palin, it was the PUMAs, who turned out to be four recently republican women who were running around Chris Matthews' desk at the convention.

The country freaks me out too, but I've decided that I'm every bit as American as the folksy bible thumping corn growing coal mining paragons featured in the media. I'm tired of the assumption (not that you were making it) that their needs somehow supersede my own. We're all in this together! That means CSA-loving progressive liberals as well!

I know this will sound corny, but I don't care: The democratic convention was the first time in almost a decade where the sight of american flags made me feel hopeful and optimistic instead of embarrassed and angry. I intend to chase this feeling!

Yay Wordstock!! (I hope we are celebrating.)

  3. I know what you mean about the flag and the convention. I think after 9/11 I started to really dislike the flag because of the way it was being used for everything, even selling Jimmy Dean sausages. I have never been a big flag lover but for some reason I am starting to appreciate what it might actually symbolize.
I thought from the start that Hillary could take John and that is what I wanted to see. Now I am not sure what will happen and I am not sure if all the rabid Obama supporters will actually vote for him on that day. I am curious to see how it all plays out. I also think that the gloves must come off. I don't care anymore that McBush was shot down in Vietnam. He should have never been there in the first place! He was not drafted! There are so many things that are getting on my nerves! McBush wants Supreme Court Justices that are constitutional literalists or something. Do we need that? Really?
