I am deficient in Vitamin YES lately. I am in the annoyingly vague zone of:

maybe
I think so
could be
I don't know
you may never know
it might work
that sounds good, but...
probably not (but maybe!)

and it is so boring! (boring's all wrong -- it's irritating; it's frightening; it's coming completely unmoored from reality which occasionally has its charms, but this is not one of those occasions.) I wish I could say this was something concrete, but it is a million ephemeral things and maybe 3 tangible things. My aim for the new week (one day at a time!) is to embrace the ephemeral, to delight in the ineffable and to get out of my own goddamned way.

So, because it is National Poetry Month, because it is the start of the week, because I am wearing bouncy moon boots and planting a flag of SO WHAT? in the uneasy jelly mountain of things that could happen, here's a poem about YES from the Poetry 180 site.

God Says Yes To Me

Kaylin Haught

I asked God if it was okay to be melodramatic

and she said yes

I asked her if it was okay to be short

and she said it sure is

I asked her if I could wear nail polish

or not wear nail polish
and she said honey

she calls me that sometimes
she said you can do just exactly

what you want to

Thanks God I said

And is it even okay if I don't paragraph

my letters

Sweetcakes God said

who knows where she picked that up

what I'm telling you is

Yes Yes Yes

(did you know that the 17th is Poem In Your Pocket Day?)

(did you know that you can subscribe to a poem a day?)

As crazy as it sounds, I do feel better already.

  1. I subsrcibed. I have been "trying" to be a bit more open to ideas that generally make my eyes roll and I think that poetry fits. I am not sure why I have such strong negative feelings regarding poetry but instead of looking into the cause I am going to dive into a solution. I am going to read poetry, or at least a poem, on a daily basis.

  2. I think there's lots of reasons people have strong negative feelings regarding poetry, and I think it's usually something to do with being forced to read really crappy poems.

I think you'd dig prose poems. I know I do! In fact, I had my eye on this collection of prose poems (various authors) and I was going to pick it up at the hwd library since they HAD IT and I didn't want to jam up my hold list and I was working that day. Guess what happened? Some WOMAN beat me to the shelf and had the nerve (the nerve!) to bring it to me to check out. I know she couldn't have known, but still... mutter, mutter, mutter

But yay! I'm glad you signed up. I think it's just through april, or just through the spring, so it's not like you'll be taking your medicine forever. And who knows, maybe it will seem less medicinal as time goes on.

  3. I actually signed up for the poetry newsletter and when I went back to sign up for the other the computer kept telling me I was entering invalid data. I found it to be annoying, so I have decided to get my poetry on the streets, like everyone else.

  4. Thanks a lot! now I'm thinking of David Bowie and Mick Jagger both dressed like Don Johnson in a hilarious 80's video version of Poetry In The Streets. everywhere, around the world/they'll be rhymin' in the streets

    I hope you're happy.
